Black Stars Coaching Debate: How Offei and de la Fuente fared with youth teams

Black Stars assistant coach Desmond Offei has recently been in the spotlight, drawing comparisons with Spanish coach Luis de la Fuente regarding their performances at youth national team levels.

These comparisons stem from reports linking Offei as a potential candidate for the Black Stars head coach role if the Ghana Football Association (GFA) fails to reach an agreement with Carlos Queiroz to continue in the position.

Despite public criticism, some fans argue that the former Black Satellites coach deserves a chance, just as Spain entrusted de la Fuente with the senior national team after his success with youth sides, a move that eventually paid off.

This GhanaWeb sports feature highlights the performances of both coaches at the youth level:

Desmond Offei

2023 African Games: Guided the Black Satellites to a gold medal in the men’s football tournament after a dramatic 90th-minute winner by Jerry Afriyie in the final at the Accra Sports Stadium.

2025 U-20 AFCON (Egypt): Eliminated in the quarterfinals after a 4–5 penalty shootout loss to hosts Egypt. Ghana had topped their group unbeaten, conceding just once.

2025 WAFU B U-20 Championship: Clinched bronze after defeating Niger 2–0 in the third-place playoff.

Luis de la Fuente

2015 UEFA European U-19 Championship: On May 5, 2013, de la Fuente was appointed at the helm of the Spain under-19 team, who won the 2015 UEFA European Championship in Greece.

2019 UEFA European U-21 Championship: He became manager of the under-21 side in July 2018, after Albert Celades resigned. His first competition was the 2019 European Championship in Italy, conquered after 2–1 final defeat of Germany in Udine.

2020 Olympic Games (Tokyo): De la Fuente was also in charge of the Spanish Olympic team at the delayed 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. His side won the silver medal, losing 2–1 to Brazil in the final.
