Kumasi-based Prophet Daniel Kusi has described the 20-year prison sentence handed to Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, as excessive in relation to the offence for which he was convicted.
Speaking on AsetsenaPa with Akoto Mansa, Prophet Kusi said he believes the punishment is disproportionate, although he acknowledged that there were indications some legal requirements had not been followed.
“His sentence is too much considering the allegation,” he said.
He also questioned the circumstances surrounding the mining concession, expressing surprise that Chairman Wontumi allegedly permitted another person to mine on land under his control instead of undertaking the mining activities himself.
“I did not understand the part where he had to give the land to another person to mine on it. Why did he not mine it himself and rather employ workers to work for him?” he asked.
Prophet Kusi further stated that, in his opinion, political considerations may have influenced the case.
“I also think that the incident is politically motivated,” he added.
