The Member of Parliament for Effutu and Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, and the Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, have jointly called on their constituents to remain calm and allow peace to prevail following violent clashes over a land dispute.
The appeal came in a joint appearance captured on video and shared on September 3, 2026.
The two MPs urged restraint among residents of Gomoa Oguaakrom and New Winneba in Ghana’s Central Region.
Addressing the situation, Afenyo-Markin expressed concern over the tensions and assured residents that steps were being taken to restore peace.
“Fellow residents of Gomoa and Effutu, we have all heard about the recent clashes between our communities. My colleague and I wish to assure you, as Members of Parliament, that we are deeply concerned and committed to restoring peace.”
“…We urge everyone to remain calm. On Saturday, we will visit the affected communities to engage with you directly and understand the root of the problem. We must not allow such incidents to happen again,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
A Plus, on the other hand, assured residents that measures had already been taken to restore calm and warned that those responsible for terrorising residents would be dealt with decisively.
“Measures have already been put in place to restore calm between Gomoa and Effutu, and we will deal decisively with any group of individuals terrorising others in the area. I am fully committed to this effort, and together, we will ensure peace prevails,” he said.
He further called for unity, stressing that harmony was the only path forward.
“Let there be peace among us.”
The violence erupted on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, around 10:40 a.m., when an estimated 300 people, reportedly from Gomoa Oguaakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze, armed with guns, cutlasses, stones and sticks, entered New Winneba.
The attackers are said to have targeted residents, shops and properties in the community, which lies along the Winneba-Swedru highway.
Police confirmed three people were killed and about 15 to 17 others injured, including a police officer. Several properties were damaged.
Six or seven suspects were later arrested, and officers recovered a locally made single-barrel gun and an empty cartridge from the scene.
Additional police personnel, including specialised units and two armoured vehicles, were deployed to secure the area and prevent further violence.
The clashes are linked to a longstanding land ownership dispute between communities in the Gomoa and Effutu areas.
