Bawumia’s presidency is coming – Afoko declares

Awentami Paul Afoko, a National Chairman hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has declared that his return to party leadership is driven by a singular goal: helping the party recapture political power and seeing Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia become President.

Speaking to party faithful in the Volta, Oti, and Central Regions, the former NPP National Chairman said he returned from retirement not for personal ambition, but because he believes the party has a renewed opportunity to rebuild and return to government.

“I didn’t leave my retirement to come in for any reason other than power. Power is all we want, so that we can use power to develop our country according to the way we see it,” he stated.

Mr. Afoko argued that the NPP’s founding ideals and political philosophy remain Ghana’s best development path, stressing that the party must first resolve its internal divisions to regain public trust.

He warned that the party’s declining parliamentary strength should serve as a wake-up call, particularly to senior members.

“If we sit back, especially you the elders, and watch it, the party that you have toiled for from your youth is on a downward trajectory,” he said.

Citing the party’s performance in Parliament, he noted that the NPP’s seats have reduced from 169 to 87, describing it as a clear signal that urgent corrective action is needed.

“We are now at 87 from 169. We all must stand up and say this party must turn the corner and rise again,” he urged.

Mr. Afoko maintained that unity is central to the NPP’s revival and eventual return to power, calling on members at all levels to set aside differences and work together to rebuild the party.

He outlined his “3Rs” campaign strategy—Reunite, Rebuild, Recapture—designed to restore cohesion and strengthen the party’s electoral fortunes.

According to him, the first step is to reunite all factions and bring back disgruntled members into a single family. The second is to rebuild strong grassroots structures from the polling station to the national level, empowering the base.

The final phase, he said, is to recapture power from the opposition and return the NPP to government.
