Former Hearts of Oak chief executive Harry Zakour has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) not to extend Carlos Queiroz’s tenure as Black Stars head coach, arguing that the national team should instead be handed to a younger Ghanaian coach.
The GFA is searching for a new coach following the reported departure of Queiroz, whose short-term contract expired after Ghana’s 2026 Fifa World Cup campaign.
The Portuguese coach guided Ghana to the knockout stage of the tournament for the first time since 2010, but talks over a contract extension are understood to have stalled.
Assistant coach Desmond Ofei has emerged as a leading candidate to take charge of the Black Stars for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Zakour, however, believes former Black Stars midfielder Laryea Kingston would be a better long-term option.
Kingston, who currently coaches Uganda’s men’s national teams, has done enough to earn an opportunity with Ghana, according to the former Hearts official.
“I don’t believe Carlos Queiroz must continue as Black Stars coach. He is old for this job,” Zakour told Sporty FM.
“We have good coaches around like Laryea Kingston, but the problem is that he will be hired, and they will not pay him.
“We have all seen what he is doing in Uganda, and I think, for me, we must give him a look.”
Meanwhile, GFA president Kurt Okraku has hinted that the appointment of a new head coach is almost done.
The Black Stars are expected to regroup in September as they begin preparations for their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.
The GFA is now expected to make a crucial decision on the team’s next permanent coach as Ghana looks to build on its World Cup performance and begin a new international cycle.
