Flood is becoming a national security issue – Kwame Jantuah

A member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Kwame Jantuah says Ghana must begin treating flooding as a major national threat rather than an occasional inconvenience.

He warned that rising flood incidents, combined with coastal erosion and rapid urbanisation, could create far more serious consequences in the future.

“We need to forward plan. We need to forward think these things,” he said.

Jantuah noted that flood challenges are no longer confined to Accra, with parts of Kumasi and northern Ghana also experiencing severe flooding.

He further raised concerns about coastal erosion, warning that the sea is gradually encroaching on parts of Ghana’s coastline.

According to him, the combined impact of flooding, coastal threats and inadequate planning could leave many people vulnerable.

“It’s not Covid that will kill us, it’s not Ebola that will kill us, but these things can kill us,” he said.

Jantuah called for coordinated national action involving local government authorities, central government, engineers and environmental experts to prevent future disasters.
