Minority Leader and Effutu MP, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and Gomoa Central MP, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, will on Saturday, September 5, visit the Gomoa and Effutu communities as part of efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the recent violent clashes between the two sides.
The two lawmakers say they will engage residents, address concerns and work with traditional leaders to help restore lasting peace following the violence linked to a longstanding land dispute.
Speaking during a Facebook Live session, Afenyo-Markin said leaders from both communities had agreed to allow peace to prevail and called on residents to exercise restraint.
“We want to assure the public that the leaders of both communities have agreed to allow peace to prevail. We will visit both communities on Saturday to engage the people, address the issues and correct the wrongs,” he said.
A-Plus also pledged his support for the peace efforts, saying the two lawmakers had adopted a strategy aimed at securing lasting peace.
“My brother has spoken and together, we have adopted a strategy to ensure lasting peace. I would like to express my appreciation to my brother for his commitment to this course,” he said.
The planned engagement follows violent clashes in New Winneba on Tuesday, September 1, which left three people dead and 17 others injured.
Police have arrested seven people in connection with the incident, which reportedly involved groups from New Winneba, Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze.
