“I do Afro-fusion music, not gospel” – Joseph Matthew explains
Joseph Matthew, a musician from Ghana who has received numerous awards, has made it clear that he identifies as an Afrofusion artist rather than an Afro-Gospel performer.
Throughout his career, the artist, who is based in the UK, has often been categorized as a gospel singer due to the spiritual messages found in popular songs like Blessed, The Name, Hallelujah, My Story, Nyame Ye, Fear No Evil, and Promise Land.
In 2025, he broadened his musical repertoire by introducing a reggae-influenced single titled Love In You.
During an interview with Hot 93.9FM in Accra, Joseph Matthew clarified his identity in music.
“I do not consider myself a gospel musician; I am an Afrofusion artist. The term ‘Afrocentric’ implies blending various styles where the foundation is African. It merges different genres inspired by African sounds. ”
He elaborated that ‘gospel’ pertains more to the message than to a stricter musical form.
“The term gospel translates to ‘Good News,’ but I do not see myself as a gospel artist. Such a message can exist in any musical form—whether it’s Hip-hop or Highlife, one can still convey a gospel message. ”
He stressed that confining his artistry to the gospel category constrains his creative expression.
To support his argument, he referenced popular secular artists like Shatta Wale and Sarkodie, pointing out that even though they have produced songs with gospel-like messages, they are not constrained by the label of gospel artists.
Joseph Matthew is set to debut his first track of 2026 titled ‘Walk’ on July 7.
