Brigadier General Nunoo Mensah

Retired Brigadier General Joseph Nunoo Mensah has said that Ghana’s current social and developmental challenges are rooted in the decline of discipline and the growing trend of soft parenting.

Calls for a Return to Discipline

Speaking at a recent public event, the former National Security Advisor stated that Ghana must revisit the values of discipline, accountability, and respect that guided the nation in earlier decades. According to him, indiscipline at all levels of society has become a major barrier to progress.

“We have lost the culture of discipline. Our young people grow up without respect for rules, elders, or even themselves,” he said.

Soft Parenting to Blame?

Nunoo Mensah also criticized modern parenting styles, describing them as too soft and permissive. He argued that parents must take greater responsibility in shaping the character of children and instilling values like hard work, honesty, and patriotism.

“Too many parents are afraid to correct their children. We cannot build a strong country on weak values,” he warned.
