A woman believed to be in her early 30s and living with a mental health condition has allegedly been abandoned by her family at St. Gregory Hospital at Gomoa Buduburam in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region.
The woman has been at the facility for some time after she was brought in for medical attention.
According to the Medical Superintendent of St. Gregory Hospital, Dr Larye Yemo, the individuals who brought the woman to the hospital initially claimed that she had been knocked down by a hit-and-run vehicle.
However, he said further inquiries conducted by the hospital later suggested that the woman had been deliberately left at the facility.
Speaking to Adom News, Dr Yemo said the hospital management had written several letters to the Gomoa East District Social Welfare Department and the District Assembly seeking assistance, but the facility was yet to receive the needed intervention.
He explained that the hospital was reluctant to discharge the woman onto the streets, particularly in view of a similar case reportedly recorded at the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital last year.
Dr Yemo said the situation had become increasingly difficult for the hospital, as the woman had allegedly attacked other patients.
He is therefore appealing to the Gomoa East District Assembly, the Social Welfare Department and other relevant authorities to urgently intervene and provide appropriate accommodation and care for the woman.
He stressed that the hospital remains willing to work with the authorities to ensure she receives the necessary support and is not left to fend for herself on the streets.
