The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Volta Region has called on President John Mahama to intervene in the ongoing exchanges between GoldBod Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, and Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
The party says the President’s silence over the matter is disappointing, arguing that the conduct of the GoldBod CEO amounts to a breach of the government’s Code of Ethics for public office holders.
The Minority, led by the Effutu MP, has been demanding answers from the government over reported losses of $1.7 billion linked to the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.
The matter has since escalated, with a lawsuit filed against Sammy Gyamfi following the exchanges.
Addressing the media, NPP Volta Regional Chairman, Makafui Woanya, accused the GoldBod CEO of abusing his position by attacking a sitting lawmaker.
“We are gathered here this morning to register our displeasure as a party in the Volta Region on Sammy Gyamfi’s conduct in public office and President Mahama’s failure to act.
“An appointee believes he’s above the President himself. An appointee has used the platform of the presidency to attack a lawmaker.That lawmaker was not only protecting the interest of Ghanaians. This is a clear violation of the Code of Ethics of this government itself published,” he said.
The NPP regional chairman is therefore demanding that President Mahama take action over the conduct of his appointee, insisting that public officials must be held accountable for their actions.
The party maintains that the controversy should not be allowed to overshadow calls for transparency and accountability over the reported $1.7 billion losses associated with the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.
