High Court denies bail for Salomey Awiti Baffoe In ‘Ghana Jollof’ case; defence to Appeal

The High Court in Accra has refused a bail application for Salomey Awiti Baffoe, the 40-year-old Senior Nursing Officer from Techiman who is facing charges linked to the controversial “Ghana Jollof” TikTok case.

The court, in its ruling on Thursday, September 24, held that the matter is cyber-related and that releasing the accused at this stage presents a real risk of interference with witnesses and ongoing investigations.

The prosecution had opposed the application, arguing that Baffoe is still needed to assist investigators and to help trace a second suspect identified as “Ghana Jollof” – UK-based TikTok personality Barbara Asantewaa Kodua, who has been declared wanted by police.

The court, however, directed the Republic to expedite its investigations.

Reacting to the ruling, counsel for the accused, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, said the defence team will file an appeal.

“We are proceeding by filing an appeal against the decision of the High Court,” Lawyer Baffour Awuah said.

Counsel had urged the court to grant bail, arguing that his client enjoys the constitutional presumption of innocence and is entitled to bail. He said the prosecution had relied on bare depositions and failed to provide sufficient grounds to justify her continued detention.

He argued that the charge – abetment of the publication of false news under Sections 20(1) and 208 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) – is a misdemeanour and does not warrant refusal of bail.

The defence also disputed claims that Baffoe could interfere with investigations, saying no evidence had been presented to support that assertion.

Lawyer Baffour Awuah further asked the court to consider her personal circumstances as a mother of minor children, noting that one of her children is due to enrol in Senior High School and her detention was affecting the process.

Salomey Awiti Baffoe was arrested in September and arraigned before the Adentan Circuit Court where she pleaded not guilty. Police allege she acted as a liaison for the “Ghana Jollof” account, assisting in recruiting persons to redistribute videos and receiving funds to facilitate their circulation. The allegations have not been proven in court.

She was initially remanded by the Adentan Circuit Court and is expected to reappear on September 30, 2026.
