Reports of Mahama third-term meeting untrue – NDC Council of Elders

Dr. Christine Amoako-Nuamah, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Council of Elders, has dismissed reports suggesting that the body met President John Dramani Mahama to discuss a purported third-term agenda.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Wednesday, June 3, she said, “I am not aware of any such meeting,” when asked whether claims that the council had engaged the President over a possible third-term bid were true.
Dr. Amoako-Nuamah explained that while the Council of Elders serves in an advisory capacity within the party, it does not function as a body that seeks to impose decisions on leadership or block political ambition.
She noted that elders are expected to provide guidance when necessary, stressing that silence in the face of internal challenges would defeat the purpose of their role.
“If you are home and something is going wrong and you cannot speak about it, then what kind of elder are you?” she questioned, emphasizing the responsibility of experienced party members to offer counsel when required.
According to her, the Council does not exist to prevent individuals from pursuing political ambitions, including presidential aspirations, but rather to provide informed advice based on experience.
“Nobody is trying to stop anybody, but we are a very experienced group of people. People who have been around for quite some time,” she said.
Meanwhile, reports attributed to Herald Newspaper indicate that President John Dramani Mahama used the said engagement to reaffirm his position against any third-term ambition, reiterating his commitment to Ghana’s constitutional two-term presidential limit during a high-level meeting with the NDC Council of Elders.
