Ghana can win 2026 World Cup but … – Charles Akonnor

Former Black Stars coach Charles Kwabla Akonnor has expressed confidence that Ghana can mount a serious challenge at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that a strong start will be key to their chances.

Akonnor, who currently manages Gor Mahia, said the team’s prospects at the tournament—co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico—will depend heavily on how they begin their campaign in Group L.

Ghana have been drawn against Panama, England and Croatia, with the former Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko coach stressing that momentum from an opening victory could shape their entire tournament.

Speaking to Akoma FM, Akonnor said belief in the squad remains high but warned that early results will be decisive.

“Ghana winning the World Cup is possible, but the most important thing is for us to win our first game,” the former Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko gaffer said.

“Our first match is very important for a strong start, and the goal is to win it. Once we do that, knowing Ghana, we will build momentum and improve from there. But it is crucial we start well because after that, we will see things flying high.”

He added that his continued support for the team is rooted in confidence in their quality and potential to deliver on the global stage.

“I have a lot of belief in this team, which is why I’m supporting them. I know they can achieve something special,” he added.

Akonnor also highlighted Ghana’s growing World Cup experience, pointing out that the 2026 edition will mark the country’s fifth appearance at the tournament.

“Ghana has come a long way. This will be our fifth World Cup appearance. By now, we should be confident in what we are doing, regardless of the opponent we face,” Akonnor stated.

The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field, before facing England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium. They will wrap up their group fixtures against Croatia on June 27.

Ghana, under coach Carlos Queiroz, will be targeting a return to the knockout stages for the first time since 2010.
