Commuters heading into Accra on the Ofankor–Achimota Highway were left stranded for hours on Monday, June 1, 2026, after a heavy traffic build-up brought movement on the busy stretch to a near standstill.
The congestion, which stretched across both the main carriageway and outer lanes, has left motorists and passengers stuck with little to no movement for most of the morning.
Adom FM/TV Presenter, Nana Osei Ampofo Adjei, who has been caught up in the gridlock, expressed frustration on Adom FM Dwaso Nsem, attributing the situation to a deteriorated section of the highway.
“I left home at 6:00 am, and after 7:30, I am now getting to Mile 7. The situation is very terrible and will cause many people to be late today, affecting productivity at work,” he lamented.
The Ofankor–Achimota stretch, which serves thousands of daily commuters from the northern parts of Accra and surrounding communities, is known for frequent congestion, particularly during peak hours and rainy conditions.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Roads and Highways has directed the Department of Urban Roads to repair a deteriorated section of the highway urgently after preliminary assessments pointed to potholes and drainage challenges, including a silted underground system, as contributing factors to the worsening traffic situation.
Road users continue to call for lasting improvements to ease congestion along the corridor, which remains one of the capital’s most critical transport routes.
