Former Finance Minister and Member of Parliament for Karaga, Mohammed Amin Adam, has declared his support for Awentami Paul Afoko in the race for National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), describing him as the right leader to reposition the party in opposition.

Dr Amin Adam said the NPP requires experienced leadership to rebuild and return to power, stressing that internal leadership choices should be guided by competence rather than popularity.

Speaking during a courtesy call by NPP leaders and aspirants at his private residence, he openly endorsed Mr Afoko.

“I support Paul Afoko for National Chairman,” he declared, drawing admiration from his guests.

According to him, political decisions within the party must be based on the ability to deliver electoral victory.

“We know the serious people who can bring us back to power. We do not follow the masses to choose someone to support; we support those we believe have the potential to win and lead the party,” he said.

Dr Amin Adam noted that while his loyalty to the NPP flagbearer, Mahamudu Bawumia, remains firm, he believes Mr Afoko stands out in terms of leadership capacity and fundraising ability.

“I have worked with Paul Afoko, and I know he is competent. He can also help raise funds for the party because we need money as a party in opposition,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Mr Afoko has been touring the country with what he calls the “3Rs Agenda”—reuniting, rebuilding and returning the NPP to power.

He has been calling for unity within the party, particularly following tensions after the 2024 electoral cycle, and has urged reconciliation among factions.

He is also advocating stronger empowerment for polling station executives, constituency executives and grassroots members.

Key aspects of his message include improved welfare, logistics support and greater inclusion in decision-making, as he positions himself as the leader to reorganise the party’s base following its 2024 election loss.
