New Patriotic Party (NPP) national chairmanship aspirant, Awentami Paul Afoko, has said the party’s 2028 presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, will require the backing of a united and well-organised party machinery to secure victory in the next general election.
Speaking at a presser to officially declare his intention to contest the party’s national chairmanship, Afoko stressed that electoral success depends on the collective strength of the party rather than the efforts of a presidential candidate alone.
“The task ahead is not his alone. It is the task of the entire party,” he said in reference to Dr Bawumia.
According to Afoko, winning national elections requires disciplined party structures, motivated grassroots supporters, effective communication and a parliamentary strategy tailored to every constituency.
“No Presidential Candidate can win without a united party, a strong organisation, disciplined structures, motivated grassroots and a parliamentary strategy that works constituency by constituency,” he stated.
He described Dr Bawumia as an important opportunity for both the NPP and Ghana, adding that the party must now focus on building an organisation that is united, properly resourced, nationally energised and strategically disciplined to maximise the presidential candidate’s chances of success.
Afoko also cautioned against blaming a single individual for the party’s defeat in the 2024 general election, arguing that electoral outcomes are shaped by several factors, including organisation, communication, economic conditions, grassroots morale, public trust and parliamentary dynamics.
“I do not believe that the setbacks of 2024 should be simplistically placed at the feet of one person. Elections are won or lost through many factors,” he noted.
He therefore urged party members to shift their attention from apportioning blame to rebuilding the NPP’s structures, expressing confidence that a united and disciplined organisation would provide the foundation needed to support Dr Bawumia and position the party to recapture power in 2028.
