Wayoe Ghanamannti Esq, the Convention People’s Party’s (CPP) 2024 vice-presidential candidate, insists both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have contributed to the political environment that encourages abusive commentary on social media.

The private legal practitioner said the practice did not begin under one political party, arguing that supporters of both the NDC and NPP had engaged in similar conduct while their parties were in government.

“Both parties are guilty. Their followers are using this as a trend,” he said on Joy Prime.

According to him, neither side could claim innocence because supporters of both parties had used social media to make derogatory comments against political opponents over the years.

Wayoe said the situation reflects a broader political culture rather than the actions of one administration.

He urged citizens to recognise that while they have the right to express their views on national issues, they are also expected to do so within the limits of the law.

“Citizens should understand that you have the leverage to speak and address national issues, but be very careful that if that ignites a legal matter, you’ll face the consequences,” he said.

He added that he disagreed with attempts to downplay the legal implications of online conduct, stressing that ignorance of the law was not a defence.

“When you fall foul of the law, it should be dealt with,” he stated.
