President John Dramani Mahama has paid tribute to the late President John Evans Atta Mills on the 14th anniversary of his passing, describing him as a mentor, friend and a leader whose legacy of integrity and humility continues to shape his approach to governance.
In a post shared on his social media pages on Friday, July 24, 2026, after attending a wreath-laying ceremony at Asomdwee Park in Accra, President Mahama reflected on the lasting impact of the late President’s life and leadership.
“Fourteen years ago today, Ghana lost a president, but I lost a mentor and a friend,” President Mahama wrote.
He said standing once again at Asomdwee Park, where Professor Mills was laid to rest, reminded him that the late President would be remembered not for the office he held but for the values he embodied.
“At Asomdwee Park this morning, I stood once again where we laid Professor Mills to rest, and I was reminded of what truly endures: not the title he held, but the man he was. Gentle. Principled. Unshaken in his convictions, even when the noise around him grew loud,” he stated.
President Mahama praised Professor Mills for demonstrating that compassion and principled leadership could coexist, describing his legacy as a source of inspiration for Ghana’s political leadership.
“Professor Mills taught us that kindness is not weakness, and that decency has no conflict with leadership. In a time when our politics can feel divided and impatient, his life is a quiet but powerful lesson,” he added.
The President also reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the values of integrity and selfless public service that characterised the late President’s administration.
“I remain committed to walking in his footsteps, leading with integrity, and treating public office as the sacred trust it truly is,” Mahama said.
President John Evans Atta Mills died in office on July 24, 2012, and is remembered annually for his contribution to Ghana’s democratic governance and public service.
