Acting National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Danquah Smith Butey, has reiterated that he will not contest the party’s national chairmanship position in the upcoming national executive elections.
Mr Butey said he has already made his position clear and remains committed to staying out of the race for the chairmanship position at the October 3 national elections.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, he stressed that his decision not to contest does not mean he will step away from supporting the NPP or its efforts to return to power in 2028.
“I have already made it clear that I am not contesting the chairmanship position, and I maintain that. I am not contesting.”
Mr Butey explained that he does not need to hold an executive position or remain in the political spotlight to contribute to the party’s success.
“I can sit back and still support the party. I don’t need to be in the limelight or in an executive position to execute or work to ensure our victory.”
He said his priority remains supporting the NPP’s broader efforts to regain power in the 2028 general elections, expressing confidence in former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s presidential candidate.
Mr Butey said he believes God will use Dr Bawumia to lead the NPP to victory and what he described as the “promised land.”
His comments come as the NPP prepares for its national executive elections scheduled for October 3, following the completion of the party’s regional executive elections.
The elections are expected to produce a new national leadership team that will steer the party’s reorganisation and preparations towards the 2028 general elections.
Chairman Butey had stated that the current national executives failed to deliver on their mandate and must be replaced ahead of the 2028 general elections.
He made these comments in an earlier interview on Dwaso Nsem in May 2025, citing the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections as a major setback that warrants change.
