The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Ghana has indicated that owners of aged buildings being demolished by government will bear the cost of the exercise.
President of the Institution, Davor Wonder, said authorities leading the demolition exercise have informed owners of affected buildings that government will not cover any expenses incurred.
He added that any landlord who fails to pay will be taken to court and made to pay the full cost of the demolition, as well as all related legal fees.
Following the collapse of a building at the North Industrial Area near Avenor on Sunday, June 7, 2026, which claimed three lives, Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak said 16 weak buildings had been identified and will be pulled down to prevent further disasters.
Authorities began the exercise on Monday, June 8, 2026, demolishing a 50-year-old five-storey building at Osu.
Speaking on Burning Issues on Adom FM with Akua Biakyewaa Yiadom, Mr. Davor Wonder explained that the buildings marked for demolition are old and unsafe for habitation. He said owners should have taken steps to address the structural defects long ago, but government has had to intervene to prevent loss of life.
He further noted that owners will be surcharged to cover all costs incurred by government in carrying out the demolitions.
