President Mahama secures deal for 1,840 agricultural machines during Belarus visit

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government is set to procure 1,840 pieces of agricultural equipment from Belarus as part of efforts to modernise Ghana’s agricultural sector and boost food production.

According to the President, the equipment will support the government’s Farmers Service Centres initiative under the Feed Ghana Programme, which seeks to improve productivity and strengthen food security nationwide.

Speaking at the first Belarus-Ghana Business Forum in Minsk on Monday June 8, 2026, President Mahama said the acquisition demonstrates the growing economic cooperation between Ghana and Belarus.

“As I speak today, Ghana has placed an order for 1,840 pieces of agricultural equipment from Belarus,” he disclosed.

He explained that the government is pursuing an ambitious agricultural transformation agenda aimed at increasing output through mechanisation, irrigation development, improved seed distribution, livestock production, and agro-processing.

“Ghana is currently undertaking one of the most ambitious agricultural modernisation programmes in its history. Through our Feed Ghana Programme, we are investing in mechanisation, irrigation, improved seeds, livestock development, and agro-processing,” he stated.

The President noted that the Farmers Service Centres being established across the country will provide farmers with access to modern machinery, technical support, and other essential services needed to enhance productivity.

President Mahama further indicated that the procurement arrangement with Belarus is already producing results and reflects the practical benefits of the partnership between the two countries.

“Indeed, the ongoing procurement of agricultural machinery from Belarus for these centres is a practical example of how our partnership is already yielding tangible results,” he said.

He expressed confidence that the collaboration would contribute significantly to the transformation of Ghana’s agricultural sector while creating jobs and improving the livelihoods of farmers.

The President also commended Belarus for its expertise in agricultural machinery production, fertiliser manufacturing, and agro-industrial systems, describing the country as an important partner in Ghana’s quest to modernise agriculture.
